I need to talk about Brother Gui because this guy is everything. On one hand he's a Soul Ferryman who can't even keep a promise about taking care of a dog properly—his excuse was basically 'I thought you meant feeding it, not giving it a home.' But on the other hand he's genuinely trying, he comes up with the revenge plan, he checks on the group chat reactions, he finds Yu Miaomiao another job to earn more life span. He's like the friend who means well but messes everything up and you still love him. And Yu Miaomiao's relationship with him evolves from skeptical to trusting to frustrated to forgiving in like four chapters. The scene where she yells at him for lying and then feels bad when he reveals the deceased woman gave her five extra days and almost ten thousand yuan—that's such a real human moment. She's furious, then embarrassed, then softens. And the dog! Maodou is basically the emotional anchor of the whole story. Yu Miaomiao isn't just doing these missions for life span, she's doing it so she can stay with her dog a little longer. That's the thing that got me. The relationship between a girl and her dog is more touching than most romance plots I've read.
