Okay so let me just say—this arc is genuinely one of the best plot movements I've read in a long time. The author doesn't just throw a date at the characters and call it a day. There's actual scaffolding here. The game session isn't filler; it's the entire foundation. We get to see Zhou Dang and Shu Jia interact in a space where they're both competent, where the banter feels earned because it's built on shared focus and trust. Then the late-night phone call hits like a plot grenade. "Your earring is still with me." Two seconds of silence. Then "Are you free tomorrow?" That's not a side plot—that's the main plot swinging wide open. And the rain! Classic romantic comedy device, sure, but the way it's used here is smart. It doesn't stop the date—it forces it into a more intimate, quieter space. The dessert shop instead of some big public outing. It strips away the spectacle and leaves just the two of them. That's not lazy writing; that's deliberate narrative compression. What really sold me was how the plot respects Shu Jia's interiority. She doesn't just say yes and bounce around happily. She spirals. She overthinks. She searches Weibo for what type of girls he likes and basically loses all confidence. That's not a detour from the plot—that IS the plot. The external event (the date) is just the vehicle for the internal journey (her realizing how much she wants this and how terrified she is of it). And the chapter ending on that fingertip brush? Chef's kiss. The plot doesn't resolve; it accelerates.
Very nice and captivating story
The easiest 5 stars I've ever given!! I love this book! I hope there's more in this series. They're both so good!!
