But of course, the real theft is happening right under everyone's nose, orchestrated by the person who looks like she has nothing to lose. The broken phone is another symbol I can't stop thinking about. It's supposed to be useless, but Zhao Moting finds another way to make it work. The system is rigged against Lin Qiao'er—the phone is broken, the clerk is corrupt, nobody in this hostel seems to care—but she still finds a way through. Not alone though. That's the thing. She figures out the conspiracy, but Zhao Moting provides the means. Their dynamic keeps shifting between independence and dependence and I think that's the real theme here. And Suisui inside her—literally carrying wisdom inside her body. The spiritual element isn't just decoration, it's part of Lin Qiao'er's power. She's not just a poor girl in a broken hostel, she's someone with a spirit companion who sees everything. The surface story is about a theft, but underneath it's about who gets to be heard and who gets believed.
