Okay I need to talk about this moment because my entire understanding of Si Nan and Xiahou Jin just got flipped upside down. For literally the entire first half of these chapters, I've been reading them as enemies. She's sneaking into his room at night trying to steal his stuff, he catches her and pins her to the wall like a thriller movie, and then—then Shou Yi drops this absolute bombshell. Xiahou Jin didn't just argue with the Emperor. He got CANED. Like, actually tortured physically—"shocking welts and torn flesh"—because he fought to keep Si Nan's father from being sent to the Northern Frontier. All this time she thought he was just some moody, cold prince who had it out for her family, and meanwhile he was out there taking physical punishment on her behalf. And the scene where she's applying medicine to his back? That's not just a romantic beat, that's a complete character pivot. She sees his wounds and the narrative explicitly says she feels "heartache"—a word the text actually uses. She's been treating the man who's supposedly her enemy's son like... like someone she cares about. And he's been doing the same thing in reverse without her knowing. The line that wrecked me was when he says "If the old sword is useful to you, keep it. There's no need to return it." He's giving her something that clearly matters to him, and he's doing it while bleeding through his robe. That's not the behavior of a guy who wants to be enemies with her. But here's what I can't stop thinking about: when she's blowing on his wounds, the text says she did it unconsciously because her mother used to do that for her. She's projecting maternal tenderness onto the guy she's been feuding with. That's some next-level subconscious attachment right there.
