Upon reflection, my initial impression after finishing the book is: it's decent. I rate it 3.5 out of 5. This marks my second or third novel by the same author, and while I enjoyed "Malicious Empress" and am currently reading "Ill-fated Consort," "A Star General" offers a different experience compared to those.
The story revolves around He Yan, a noblewoman who swaps places with her cousin, who was predicted to have a short life. Taking on her cousin's male identity, He Yan rises to become a celebrated general of Great Wei. Eventually, they switch back, but tragedy strikes, and He Yan dies due to her family's fear of exposure. Her spirit reincarnates into another girl with the same name from a humble background. Unlike her past lives, this time, she chooses to live without the burden of familial responsibilities, pursuing friendship and love.
Although the reincarnation theme remains, "A Star General" focuses more on He Yan's personal growth and reliving her life than seeking revenge, which is a significant contrast to "Malicious Empress" and "Ill-fated Consort." Revenge only becomes a major plot point after Chapter 190 and lasts for about half the book. This change in pacing may appeal or disappoint, depending on one's preference for plotting and revenge.
In terms of characters, He Yan stands out as the kindest, driven by exposing her family's truth rather than seeking cruel vengeance. Jiang Ruan from "Ill-fated Consort" is the coldest, while Shen Miao shifts her focus from revenge. In terms of romance, "A Star General" is the most romantic, with He Yan and Xiao Jue displaying a playful dynamic.
While I personally prefer "Malicious Empress" for its well-roundedness, I can see why some might resonate more with "A Star General" due to He Yan's likability and the focus on character development and romance. He Yan genuinely strives for a fulfilling life, qualities absent in her previous novels.
Positive aspects include:
1. Greater character development for the protagonist.
2. More emphasis on He Yan's personal experiences and relationships.
3. Engaging supporting characters and subplots, such as He Yan's master and army companions.
However, there are drawbacks:
1. The pacing is uneven, with a slow start followed by a rushed climax.
2. The story feels bloated; trimming it would not significantly impact the narrative.
3. The secondary male lead, Chu Zhao, is underutilized and lacks depth, despite an intriguing backstory.
4. Court politics are underdeveloped, with insufficient exploration of conflicts like the crown prince vs. fourth prince and Xiao Jue vs. Minister Xu.
5. The revenge storyline lacks satisfaction, with a weak resolution for the original He family's downfall.
Characters in this novel seem less intelligent compared to those in the author's other works, where they exhibit more cunning and strategic thinking.
In summary, "A Star General" offers a different take on the author's style, with a focus on character growth and romance, but it falls short in pacing and character complexity compared to "Malicious Empress." While enjoyable, it may not be a revisited favorite for me.
I follow up to date. And all I can say is that the author threw away a topic that had potential in the beginning. His style of empowerment is beautiful and original. But when it comes to the harem and other characters, it's complete sh*t. The Unknown as the enemy is good. But everything else was done superficially. In particular, he always pairs female characters with very important figures to make them seem even more important. It turns into a cliché China series as it progresses. My score is currently 2.1

Endless Inner monologues killing this novel. Through them AT telling us lore of the world but he doing it always in wrong times...
A very good novel in ALL aspects except one horrendous mistake (for me) that is the last enemy that is dual race.
I feel pity for them, they are living on a frozen hell and only want to live in a better environment. But because the author hates to the core the japanese and the dual race are "pictured as japanese" (WW2 sh*t) so they are considered as amoral degenerates and exterminated to the last (Including children and elders).
But I still recommend this novel, one mistake at the end don't destroy the rest of a good novel.
