The original owner would have demanded expensive bouquets as proof of love; the new girl buys practical sunflowers and actually visits the hospital. Then there's the bus. A crowded, sweaty, jostling public bus—so different from the business-class taxis the original Shen Xingyao took. It's a symbol of Pei Yanqiu's fallen status, but also of their new reality. They're stuck together on this bumpy ride, and the physical closeness that results from it—the lap sitting, the arm around the waist—feels earned because they're sharing something real, not performing romance. Money is this constant undercurrent. Pei Yanqiu's frozen bank card, the thirty-eight yuan flowers, the leftover fried rice, the Canada Goose jacket she's worried about staining. The story isn't just a romance, it's about what happens when you lose financial security and have to rebuild trust from scratch. "She had always been like a weed—blown by the wind, she would seize the opportunity to take root wherever she landed." That line about Shen Xingyao being a weed? That's the theme right there. Survival, adaptation, finding a way to grow in impossible soil.

I didn't expect it to be so emotional. This novel is a blend of comedy, brutality, discrimination, and racism, among other themes. However, it was written in a way that felt authentic and believable. Given the ancient China setting, I anticipated encountering uncomfortable topics.
The characters were never one-dimensional. The main character (MC) was naive but not in the overly idealistic sense where they shoulder every responsibility and expect everything to go their way. This MC understands the brutality of the ancient era but adapts to it relatively easily, partly due to the gossip system. Additionally, the MC doesn't have a romantic love interest, which I found refreshing.
Even though some parts of the novel are challenging to read, I'm glad I finished it. I particularly loved the ending and how the author chose to conclude the story. While some might find the ending abrupt, I believe it is the most fitting conclusion.
However, if you are easily upset, I don't recommend this novel, as some sections are quite sensitive.

- **Unhealthy Obsession:** The MC has an unhealthy obsession with foreigners, particularly the Japanese, with no clear reason or background provided for this dislike.
- **Slavery:** The novel includes scenes of slavery, which arise from wars over resources. The losing side often becomes slaves to the victors, reflecting the brutal nature of war and ancient times. While this is not the MC's fault, it adds to the harsh realities of the setting. Aside from these elements, the rest of the novel is fairly typical for an ancient China story.

The only minor setback is the lack of strong antagonists; perhaps two plot-driven enemies推动故事发展, but they don't elicit intense hatred. Instead, their unlikability adds a subtle layer to the narrative. Surprisingly, this doesn't detract from the overall experience, thanks to the well-developed protagonists.
Set against a backdrop of a technologically advanced society, the story combines youthful love, rekindled passions, political intrigue, mecha warfare, and even hints at interstellar travel. However, space travel serves more as a plot device rather than the main focus.
In conclusion, this is a heartwarming and captivating tale. Out of sheer eagerness, I even resorted to Google Translate for the remaining chapters (luckily, the translation works quite well). I'd happily follow the English releases, and to access the original content, simply search on the translator's website, as they provide the untranslated versions too.
