Okay, can we just talk about how brilliantly the author strips these people bare? The Jin collateral branches — He Shi, Mrs. Wen, Li Shi — they were all practically drooling over Mo'er when they needed something. Now he's dead and they're immediately turning on Liu Suyi like vultures. "Sister-in-law, your maternal family surely won't abandon you, right?" Yeah, right. The moment the power disappears, the sycophants reveal themselves. It's disgusting and so real. But Cheng Qiqi — oh man, Cheng Qiqi is my favorite in this whole mess. She's got her daughter An'an in this filthy prison cell, watching her own father die, and what does she do? She quietly tears cotton, stuffs it in her daughter's ears, and blocks the sun. No drama, no complaining. Just... protecting what matters. And when Jin Qing'er tries to blame her for bringing bad luck, Cheng Qiqi literally kicks the girl into the dirt. I love her. And Liu Suyi — she's mourning Mo'er silently, crying alone, but still managing to keep the porridge saved for the elderly lady. These women are holding everything together while the men are either dead or imprisoned. The author really knows how to make you respect the quiet ones.

I can’t say enough good things about both books, & I have to admit that I loved Lewis’s & Ariana’s story just a bit more! Well written, great storylines and plots that were very vivid and descriptive, and incredible characters! I could “feel” every emotion they felt! Both worthy of a 5 ...️ ratings!
