When I see some mothers treating their children in a bad way, I do wonder what could have gone wrong. Because how can someone in her right senses, hate a child she carried for 9 months?
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how sharp Dai Qing's dialogue is? This woman does not suffer fools. When Liu Ming tries his 'hey little sister, what a coincidence' routine with his entourage of laughing buddies, she doesn't flinch. She looks him up and down—notes his fake-clean clothes—and then drops this: 'And who might you be? We don't know each other. The way you and your pals are acting is downright offensive. If you pulled this nonsense out on the streets, it'd be considered harassment, and you'd end up in jail.' I literally gasped. The way she then threatens to report him to the security office while making eye contact with Cheng Hao at the window? Chef's kiss. Every character has a distinct voice too. Yan Biao speaks like a street-smart operator—'Brother Hao, right? Please calm down' with that grinning, wincing energy. Ge Bing is the loud, impulsive one: 'What? Someone like him—such a scumbag—has such good luck? How are good people like us supposed to live? That's not fair.' Cheng Hao is the quiet observer, the one who notices things but doesn't always say them out loud. And Dai Qing? Her dialogue is sparse but devastating. When she tells Yan Biao about his fortune, she's calm and measured. When she talks to Ge Bing about fairness, she's almost philosophical: 'Fairness isn't measured solely by wealth. Other gains and losses are beyond calculation.' The author's narrative voice is also great—wry, observant, never over-explaining. There's a scene where Dai Qing accepts the sixty yuan and 'glanced at the two people standing as mere background props before walking away.' That line alone tells us so much about her character without any internal monologue.
