There's this recurring image of barriers and separation that keeps appearing, and I think it's doing a lot of heavy lifting thematically. The prison visit has Xu Huai'an and his father separated by thick glass - literally unable to touch, separated by law and betrayal. But then there's also the social glass between Xu Huai'an and his relatives, who look down on him and his mother but suddenly want his help when their business is failing. The luxury of the Xu villa is described as having floors so polished you can see your reflection, crystal chandeliers, impeccable decor - but the text specifically says the space felt empty. All that wealth, all that opulence, and it's hollow. Xu Huai'an is surrounded by material comfort but completely alone. And then there's the pencil. Xie Wenxing's nervous habit of touching that pencil, worn smooth from constant handling. It's this small, personal object that represents his anxiety, his unspoken feelings, his need to hold onto something when he's overwhelmed. The pencil becomes the thing he throws at Xu Huai'an in his panic - a pathetic little projectile of affection that Xu Huai'an picks up and examines. The text also keeps using animal imagery - Xie Wenxing as a rabbit, Xu Huai'an as a wolf. But I wonder if this is more complex than simple predator and prey. The rabbit isn't just scared - it's drawn to the wolf. And the wolf isn't just hunting - he's protecting, or at least, he's interested. The power dynamic here is fluid, and I think the story is exploring how vulnerability and strength can exist in the same person, how love and revenge can occupy the same heart.
