Okay so let me just say this: Eldest Young Madam Lu is my new favorite person and I need everyone to understand why. The moment Eldest Young Madam Hu opens her mouth with that cow dung comment, I was already bracing for damage. But then Lu A Shu hits back with 'Could it be that you have eaten it before?' and I literally screamed. That is some next-level military family energy right there. But what really got me is how Jiang Lingyuan handles herself. She doesn't flinch. She doesn't get flustered. She just steps in and reframes the whole thing like 'is she saying the Duke of Yu Manor's atmosphere is unpleasant?' That's not just clever, that's surgical. She made the entire crowd laugh at Hu while pretending to be polite about it. And then Princess Changning shows up like 'I had nothing better to do, watching a pack of dogs bark is entertaining enough' and honestly I think I passed out for a second. The power dynamic shift in that garden was insane. Hu went from predator to prey so fast. The thing I keep thinking about though is Lu Yun. He saw his wife and his sister-in-law already laughing together and 'the corners of his lips had slightly lifted, carrying a hint of appreciation and pride.' That's such a small detail but it tells us everything about how he sees her. She's already winning people over without even trying. Meanwhile he has no idea how many young ladies in the capital would kill to be in her position. The dramatic irony is delicious.

Loved the first book and I’m completely hooked on the sequel. Can’t wait to see everyone from the second generation and see how their lives play out.
of all the books I've read on this app (yes it's been quite a lot actually) this has been my favorite read and I've spent many nights reading much later than I really should! Amazing work and looking forward to the next book!
