I like this book
I'm still thinking about the scene where Shi Ruyi deliberately wore that ugly yellow dress to ruin her own image in front of Wen Youan. And he—sweet, oblivious Wen Youan—thinks she chose it TO COMPLEMENT HIM. "His Highness had truly put a lot of thought into this meeting, choosing the most vibrant color possible. He must have worn it to complement him." I literally screamed. This boy is so hopelessly in love that he's romanticizing her attempt to reject him. And then he changes into the SAME COLOR. Same color. SAME. COLOR. And when she notices, he's like 'my other clothes don't fit me so I had to find this one' but we ALL know that's a lie because he was watching her the whole time. The worst part is Shi Ruyi's internal monologue: "By wearing this color and revealing the dark circles under her eyes, she was intent on ruining her image in Wen Youan's mind." She's trying so hard to be unappealing and he's just... thriving. Every rejection is feeding his hope. And then the water-pouring scene. She's sitting there dying inside while this boy keeps refilling her cup under the pretense of being helpful. "Wen Youan had no complaints; instead, he relished the experience." RElished. He's having the time of his life and she's slowly suffocating. But honestly the most emotionally complex moment for me was Wen Qing's reaction when Wen Youan blurts out 'Your Highness, are you thirsty because you saw the minister?' and she CHOKES on her tea. Not because she's offended—because she realizes her son has been thinking about this way more deeply than she gave him credit for. The text says: 'Such… words made Wen Qing feel like she hadn't really understood her own child before.' That's the moment a mother realizes her kid is growing up and she's losing him.
