I know to trust the process and this book will not be an exception to that. This style is vastly different from anything written so far and that shows that she is capable of many different styles of writing, not just HEA stories. The fact that we don’t know who to trust thus far in builds suspense.
The stakes in this chapter are deceptively low-key until they suddenly aren't. Let me walk through the escalation: First layer: ration distribution. Shi Meijiao opens her mouth to complain about the grain allocation, and Zhou Shuchen literally covers her mouth. The brigade leader is visibly relieved she didn't speak. Why? Because wealthy youth are 'harder to manage.' One wrong word and the office sends you back to a harsher place. That's the immediate stakes—survival through silence. Second layer: the money theft. An Ruoyan took Shi Qiang's money. Shi Qiang discovers it three days later, faints, and reports it to the police. The police question neighbors, find nothing, and everyone assumes the money is gone. Shi Qiang falls ill and can't notify Shi Meijiao. This is HUGE because it severs Shi Meijiao's financial lifeline without her even knowing it yet. She's walking around thinking her father sent money, but the money was never sent because the sender is incapacitated. Third layer: Zhang Cuifa extracting fifty cents from Shi Meijiao. It seems trivial—fifty cents!—but it establishes that Shi Meijiao is already being bled dry by people who know she's from a wealthy family. She gives the money disdainfully, thinking she's destined for greatness, but she's already being picked clean. And the black market! An Ruoyan and Deng Xiuli buying pork belly and live chickens, tempted to keep them. The risk of getting caught versus the reward of real food. Every transaction in this story carries weight because everything is scarce. The tension never drops. Even the 'relaxing' scene of eating sunflower seeds on the carriage is undercut by Zhang Cuifa's scheming and Shi Meijiao's barely-contained rage. I'm constantly on edge wondering what will snap first.
