There are three objects in this chapter that I can't stop thinking about, and they're not random. The key, the petal, and the mother's last words—they form this invisible triangle that holds the whole story together. The key. Zhou Guchuan clutching it in his palm when he first arrives at the Zhou family home, the teeth digging into his skin until they leave red marks. That key opens the door to a house he can never go back to, a house that no longer exists, a mother who's dead. It's the physical manifestation of his rootlessness. And yet he keeps it. Five years later, he still has it. The petal. Plucked gently from Yin Lan's hair, carried through the entire day, and finally placed between the pages of his Principles of Economics textbook. This is such a loaded image. The jacaranda petal—beautiful, ephemeral, something that falls from a tree and could be blown away at any moment—pressed between the pages of a book about building wealth and power. It's the moment where his romantic longing meets his practical ambition, and neither one gives way. He wants her, but he also wants the life she represents. And maybe those two things are the same thing to him. And then there's the mother's last words: "Your father has it hard outside. Don't blame him." The author circles back to this twice—first when Zhou Guchuan is remembering her death, and then when Zhou Desheng is congratulating him, saying "a tiger father doesn't have a dog son." The irony is almost unbearable. Wen Wen died forgiving a man who abandoned her, and now her son is being celebrated by that same man for marrying into a powerful family. The mother's letting go becomes the son's driving force. She had no strength left for hatred, so he had to carry it for both of them.

Excellent book in this series of the Bloodmoon Pack. Author Bryant has raised the bar so high in regards to John Kinsley that all other men pale into insignificance. Brilliant book with a great storyline well worth reading.
