Found out at the end that this was a sequel. It didnt matter though because it was still good as a standalone. Awesome story! Read the entire book today...couldn't put it down! I think it was the twists and turns and the anticipation that kept me going. Great job!

But look closer at what's actually at risk for each character. For Han Dongyuan, the stakes are enormous. He's putting up his own money—money he made through somewhat gray-area activities (buying mountain goods with grain coupons, selling them for profit)—to fund something that could fail. If the workshop doesn't work, he's not just out cash; he's lost credibility with the brigade. He's already told the leaders: "When it comes to the workshop, I make the decisions." That's a power play, and power plays can backfire. He's building something independent in a system that doesn't tolerate independence. For Cheng Ning, the stakes are personal and she's barely acknowledging it. She sent those supplies. She defended Han Dongyuan to Zhu Xiankai. But when pressed about the workshop, she says she knew nothing. Is that true? Or is she protecting something? The tension between what she says and what she does is the central conflict of the romantic plot, and it's working beautifully. Then there's Zhao Zhi. Her conflict is smaller in scope but no less intense. She's watching Cheng Ning—this beautiful, capable woman who chased Han Dongyuan all the way to the countryside—and she's realizing that Han Dongyuan doesn't seem to care. That relief she feels? It's not just about competition. It's about power. If he doesn't want her, then she hasn't lost anything. That's a different kind of stakes. And the village itself is at stake. The brigade is broke. Two hundred yuan and some grain coupons for an entire winter. The workshop isn't a luxury—it's survival. When Han Dongyuan says "in the dead of winter, it's better than just chopping trees for firewood," he's not being poetic. He's stating the literal stakes. Every conflict here is layered. Nothing is simple. That's why I can't stop reading.

I love the story. Absolutely gonna finish reading it. I saw the author's comment that it won't be that too long. I don't like reading dragging and repetitive novel.

I love the story line & the characters & how everything is set around what real life is & it isnt all about them doing each other all the time. Very sad the background Deanna came from but I really loved the story & cant wait for the rest hopefully soon 2 be released.
