The plot of the story is a master piece, I enjoy everything about the book.
I've been thinking about this scene where Jiang Shuxiu looks at Zhao Xian and wonders if her grandmother was ever different. The text says: "She tried placing the baby in Jiang Wei's arms again, and this time, the baby really didn't cry." And then Jiang Wei insists he saw her smile. The wet nurse can't confirm it—the baby was only born a short while ago, smiling is rare—but Jiang Wei chooses to believe it. And that belief changes everything about how he holds his daughter afterward. This is the emotional core of the entire novel, isn't it? The idea that love is not something you're born knowing how to give, but something you learn through practice. Zhao Xian literally teaches Jiang Wei to be a father by making him hold the baby, by explaining that "He didn't give birth to you, doesn't know how hard it is to have a child. If he doesn't hold you more, how will he learn to love you?" But the most emotionally complex relationship here is between Zhao Xian and Li Lianniang. On one level, it's mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, a relationship that in the original novel was defined by blame and criticism. On another level, Zhao Xian is someone who remembers what happens to Li Lianniang in the future—and she's trying to prevent it. That creates this strange intimacy where Zhao Xian knows Li Lianniang's entire tragic arc but Li Lianniang only knows the kinder version of her mother-in-law that exists in the present. The moment that absolutely destroyed me was when Li Lianniang says: "Mother, your daughter-in-law never imagined you would personally come to care for me during my confinement." And Zhao Xian deflects with practical excuses about distance and gossip. But we know the truth—Zhao Xian moved into Yunzhu Yuan because she cared. She couldn't bear to watch the tragedy unfold from a distance. And then the baby cries, Jiang Wei leaves, and Li Lianniang's face turns bitter. That's the emotional whiplash of living in a story where the happy ending isn't guaranteed. Every good moment is fragile, every bond is testable, and the original plot is always waiting in the wings like a predator.
