The structure of these chapters is doing something really clever and I want to break it down because the author is playing with time and tension in a way that rewards careful reading. Chapter 4 opens with worldbuilding — the layout of the courtyards, the history of Concubine Su and Concubine Ding, the social hierarchy. It's slow, almost documentary. You're getting your bearings. Then Chapter 5 pivots HARD into emotional territory with the fainting scene and the thunderstorm. That transition from exposition to action is jarring in the best way — it's like the story itself is holding its breath and then exhaling. The scene transitions are also doing interesting work. We go from the dining room confrontation → Liu Chengxu carrying Xiao Fu Shi → the west courtyard → back to Li Shu sleeping alone. Each transition cuts at a moment of maximum emotional weight. The author doesn't linger on Fu Shi's reaction after her husband leaves; we just feel the absence. That's confident pacing. But what really controls the tension is the thunder. It appears twice — once when Xiao Fu Shi is with Liu Chengxu and she grabs his hand in fear, and the fact that she's "still terrified of thunder" after all this time tells us this trauma is old and deep. The thunder is a structural marker, a beat that punctuates the emotional arc. Each clap pushes the scene forward. The chapter endings are also worth noting. Chapter 4 ends with Liu Chengxu rushing out — classic cliffhanger energy. Chapter 5 ends with Li Shu's backstory dropping like a bomb — she was married off, betrayed, sold into another terrible situation. The pacing here is almost cruel because we're just getting warmed up and the author yanks back the curtain on her entire tragic past. I was NOT ready for that and I loved it.
