I need to talk about how this chapter moves because honestly the pacing is kind of masterful and I don't think I've appreciated it enough until now. We start with Song Zhiyi moving into the Lin residence—small, quiet, domestic scenes. She's unpacking, arranging towels, eating cornmeal buns. It's slow. Intimate. Almost boring if you're looking for action. And then Lin Huaiyu shows up with lunchboxes, and the energy shifts slightly—he's taking care of her in his own awkward, authoritative way. Then she gets the next day off and suddenly we're in a bustling market with her aunt and cousin. The transition from the quiet Lin residence to the noisy cooperative feels completely natural, like a breath being let out after holding it. And then—boom—she reveals the Wen Shufen story and the chapter ends on Zhong Shuxian's trembling rage. That's a lot of emotional movement in one chapter. The author doesn't rush any of it though. The market scene lingers on Shuangshuang touching the pink corduroy, on the aunt's faded smile, on Song Zhiyi's internal reflection about her past life. These pauses give the action weight. If the author had just skipped to the revenge reveal, it wouldn't have hit as hard. The domestic quiet before the emotional storm is what makes the storm matter. I also appreciate that the chapter doesn't end on a cliffhanger per se, but on an emotional peak—Zhong Shuxian's anger. That's a different kind of hook. It makes you want to see what happens next with the family dynamic, not just what happens with the plot. The structure here is: settle in → small kindness → domestic peace → burst of action/revenge → family reaction. It's a complete emotional arc within a single chapter, and it doesn't feel rushed at all.
Loving this story. How often are the updates?
I really enjoyed this book. It was sad, sweet, dramatic, romantic, violent, and had a wonderful ending. My only complaint is that some chapters that are from a different POV repeat 90% of the same scenes stated in another chapter. If they had been combined some way it would have been perfect!
