Let me just say this: the desolate courtyard is my favorite setting in the entire novel so far. It's not grand. It's not impressive. It's falling apart. But Yuyi Yue is renovating it room by room, and somehow it feels more alive than any palace or mansion ever could. The details are what get me. The fallen leaves under the weeping willow swept into piles. The new wooden table with soft cushions. The moss cleared from the walls to make room for a display shelf. These aren't just descriptions—they're acts of love. She's building a home. And Fang Xun'gui, who has no home, notices every single thing. The way he pauses at the doorway because "it's not appropriate"—he's so used to being a guest nowhere, to taking up space only when necessary. When she tells him to come in, he follows. Not because he wants to, but because he doesn't know how to refuse. The月光 (moonlight) scene at the end though—oh my god. The wind howling, withered leaves and thin frost swirling through Moon-Cutting Mountain. He runs until his lungs burn, and then he stops at the cliff's edge. The imagery is so stark, so cold, and yet his heart is pounding so loud it drowns out everything else. "His fingertip still throbbed faintly—such a tiny wound, yet she had carefully applied herbs and wrapped it with fine gauze." That contrast between the vast desolate mountain and the tiny wound on his finger... it's perfect. The world is huge and indifferent, but someone noticed the smallest detail about him. I need to visit this courtyard in my dreams.
