This book was a surprise. Once you got past the unedited chapters, the book and intrigue really came together. So many questions still but looking forward to the sequel.

I need to talk about this meal scene because it's deceptively simple and I kept re-reading it. On paper, it's just three people sharing a home-cooked meal with a family who barely has anything. Fried tofu, braised eggplant, cabbage stew with tofu, stir-fried greens, radish cakes. That's it. But the text makes such a point of saying 'in these times, being able to eat one's fill was a rare blessing, especially since Shen Youran's family had only fled from famine less than a year ago.' And then Shen Youming can't reach the table so he stands up stretching his little arms and everyone laughs and Shen Youran clinks his bowl with his brother's. The whole thing is just so tender and ordinary and that's what makes it hit so hard. These people have survived something terrible and what they're celebrating is a meal together. Li Jinhua's scene where she's looking at her two taels of silver and thinking about how she needs to figure out money-making ideas while also taking apart winter clothes to remake them for Ah Tao—she had this moment where she saw Shen Youran's happy face after eating and her eyes turned red but she 'quickly snapped out of it.' She couldn't even let herself grieve properly because there was too much to do. The text says: 'No matter how much she grieved or cried, she couldn't return to the past. She needed to pull herself together and lead the children towards a better future.' That line just wrecked me. She's holding everything together with thread and hope.
Finally a book that has ended.....And I am not gonna lie this was a really fun book throughout all its chapters with every subplot being used in a magnificent way towards the end......Great job on the book author ...️
Tons of grammatical errors-repeat sentences and repeated chapters. Do not waste your money.
