Okay so let me just say this upfront: the plot mechanics in these chapters are genuinely clever and I need to talk about it. Lu Dantao wakes up with a dagger at her neck and instead of panicking, she immediately starts negotiating. She identifies Xue Yao's pain point—his hatred for Pei Di—and offers herself as a strategic asset. The insurance training camp reference? Genius. She literally uses sales tactics on a wounded male lead and it works. The whole Avengers Alliance thing sounds ridiculous but it's the kind of plot device that makes you keep reading because you're curious whether this partnership will actually hold together. What really got me though is the nested deception layer. Xue Yao doesn't believe her story about being Pei Di's ex-fiancée, right? He literally thinks she's lying. But then he also suspects she might not actually recognize him, which means there's this whole amnesia question hanging over everything. And then the physician Liu Jin is taking bribes from corrupt officers while secretly running a front that deals with both the underworld and the government. The plot is stacking mysteries on top of mysteries and I am here for it. The pacing is also noteworthy—each scene ends on a little cliffhanger. She asks about the medicine, he hides behind the door and watches her leave, she walks into the main hall and sees the corrupt officials. It's like the author keeps pulling the rug out from under you every few paragraphs. Makes it impossible to put down, honestly.
