There's this recurring idea in the text that intelligence is dangerous. Nie Lingchuan literally says it: 'I think Yaoyao dropped out of school because she was too smart.' And then he reveals she speaks nine languages, self-taught. Nine. Languages. In a context where the internet has branded her an uneducated dropout who skipped classes and got into fights, this revelation is devastating. The story is really asking: what happens to a brilliant person in a world that only sees the surface? Nie Fuyao's intelligence is both her salvation and her isolation. It's what makes her capable of passing the Qingyingban exam, but it's also what made her unable to fit into the systems that were supposed to protect her. She was too smart for her peers, too aware of the injustice around her, too perceptive to pretend everything was fine. The kitten is interesting here too. It's small, vulnerable, abandoned — everything Nie Fuyao felt. And she protects it despite her allergy, despite her best interests. It's a symbol of her own desire to be protected, to be chosen, to matter to someone. The online comments about 'setting a terrible example for kids' are particularly bitter irony. The people calling her uneducated are the ones who can't see past the rumors. The people who call actors 'low-class' are the ones revealing their own classist ignorance. The story is holding up a mirror and the reflection is ugly.
