This is a good book. No boring moment. Full of suspense, captivating from the beginning to the end. Well done to the author.

And now here's Xiaohe, cooking something beautiful with ingredients she scavenged and traded for. The contrast between the oppression and this small act of care is where the pacing really shines. The author doesn't rush. They let you sit in the discomfort of the family's situation, then they give you this warm, glowing moment of porridge and shared bowls and parents pretending they've already eaten so the kids can have more. And then—just when you're getting comfortable—the text cuts to the next morning and Erya is pacing outside, worried they're dead. That whiplash is intentional. It keeps you on edge. You're never allowed to fully relax because the threat is always there. But then Yu Ya shows up and the pacing lightens—she's chatty, energetic, catching fish, talking about the sea. It's a breather, but not too long. And then the pheasant eggs. Eight of them. The joy is almost comical in how genuine it feels. The structure here is basically: suffering → small warmth → tension → relief → hope. And it loops. It doesn't resolve, but it gives you enough momentum to keep going.

This line hit me like a truck—pun absolutely intended given what happens later. Let me just say: Jiang Yi is the most tragic romantic lead I've encountered in a while. Everything he did was for her. He turned down staying at the university because the salary was too low. He went to S City to build a future they could share. And when his mom died, his first thought wasn't even about the funeral arrangements—it was about that unread message from Cheng Lin. He thought: No. He could not lose her. He packed his bags that same night, couldn't even buy a proper train ticket because he was in such a rush, and got into that fatal car accident while driving back to her. The unsent draft message at the end? I'm not okay. Meanwhile Cheng Lin, in her previous life, just accepted the breakup at face value. She called his roommate, found out he'd disappeared, and that was it. She moved on. But now, reborn, she's holding his photo and saying "Golden thigh, my retirement life depends on you. You must stay alive." There's this gorgeous, painful irony where she's trying to save herself in the apocalypse but her entire motivation is keeping him alive. Their love story is built on miscommunication and timing, but the depth of feeling underneath it all? Chef's kiss. Absolutely devastating.
It's frustrating how the FL often turns into a helpless damsel when around the ML, losing both her intelligence and composure, relying on him to rescue her. Frankly, her incompetence seemed to start way back at the beginning of the story.
I really appreciated how minor characters orgMC and orgML play insignificant roles in the story, without disrupting the flow or quality of the narrative. The writing and translation are both commendable, as they maintain a balanced tone without excessive melodrama or deep character development. The plot of gosts appears scattered and lacks direction, but the romantic aspect is endearing, and there are plenty of humorous exchanges between the protagonist and other characters.
