I had high hopes for this novel, but my emotions are mixed. To begin with, the horror aspect failed to deliver – the author lacks the skill to create an eerie atmosphere, opting instead for excessive gore over genuine fear. I was hoping for a chilling experience while reading at night, but that didn't happen; no goosebumps or tension could be found. This novel falls far short of another work like "Welcome to the Nightmare Live," which truly left me on edge.
The concepts of the Urban Fantasy (UF) elements were decent, perhaps except for the circus subplot that felt tedious. The execution was decent, but the novel lacked that awe-inspiring factor. The protagonist's character development felt lacking; much of his progress was attributed to luck, which the author repeatedly emphasizes as a skill. However, this comes across as lazy writing, as plot events occur solely to ensure the main character's survival.
The power dynamic between the MC and ML is glaringly imbalanced, and the attempt to portray them as equals is comical. Despite these shortcomings, I must say the novel isn't entirely terrible; I managed to finish it, which counts as a small victory. If you're looking for a scare, this might not be your cup of tea, but if you're after a decently written book, it's worth giving it a chance.
Ethan keeps saying he needs to not judge things by human standards and morals, but even from a demons perspective, it seems strange to me that they would culturally accept sharing their wives, even if that wife is a succubus, and the one they are sharing it with is their son. Why? Because three of the Cardinal Sins with which demons are meant to embody are Pride, Greed, and Avarice, and neither of those three sins are particularly condosive to sharing.
So it's extremely weird to me that they would just shrug it off, like, "oh, she's just feeding our children, it can't be helped," especially when the level of intimacy and passion clearly goes far beyond the level of "just feeding." I mean it would be one thing if they just begrudgingly/reluctantly accepted it, but they seem to not care at all.
Decent novel by far, the author may not be the best but he/she is trying to improve. Up to my reading status. the story is pretty decently paced but it might be a bit fast for others. Still, keep up the good work.
