A clever and well written, exciting story! It has a good mix between romance and politics, adventure and mysteries. This is the story that the tv show is loosely based on and which is good, but the novel is even better for sure. I find the translation very good as well, It has a good flow and vibrant language!I can’t wait to be able to read the whole story as I know there is a lot left!

Let me just say: the fermented paste reveal is such a smart narrative device. Bai Qi tastes perilla in the paste and INSTANTLY connects it to the Minister of the Court of Imperial Entertainments who was executed fourteen years ago for secretly altering imperial fermented paste recipes. Fourteen years. That's a whole backstory simmering under the surface. And then the Chen Family Restaurant angle drops like a bomb — Manager Zhou sending thirty percent of profits to Vice Minister Lin Chongyuan's private residence. This isn't just about food anymore. The grain granary corruption case Bai Qi is working on, the shipwreck that exposed the deficit, the forged accounts — it's ALL connected. The author is weaving these threads so carefully. Every meal Qin Yaoyao prepares becomes a piece of evidence in Bai Qi's investigation, which is honestly such a clever way to make cooking scenes feel urgent and plot-relevant instead of just cozy filler. The most satisfying part? Bai Qi eating more than he has in years. His digestive system is recovering, and the food is literally healing him while simultaneously uncovering a corruption network. Two plotlines feeding each other. I love that.
