I have to talk about how the author structures these chapters because the pacing is genuinely excellent. We start with the Mei family's perspective — Mei Qian laying out her plan, the strategy session around the campfire, that moment of quiet calculation. Then BOOM, we cut to the Han family's campfire and suddenly we're seeing the other side of the board. Han Laoer furious, Han Laosan getting kicked, the whole dynamic of these people who think they're clever but are actually walking right into a trap. That perspective switch is so satisfying because it gives us dramatic irony — we know what Mei Qian is planning while the Han family has no idea. And then we cut back to Han Shi's performance, which is where the pacing really shines. The scene builds from her dramatic entrance (grabbing the bun, wailing 'Mother!') through the whole exaggerated sob story, and just when Huang Shi is fully hooked and ready to spill all the secrets... Mei Qian appears like a shadow and interrupts. The timing is perfect. It's like the author knows exactly when to let a scene breathe and when to cut it short. The chapter then moves to the aftermath — Huang Shi reporting back to her sons, the other families discussing the Mei family's warnings, and finally that quiet nighttime scene where Mei Qian and Mei Shitou are practicing swordplay while spies sneak around. The pacing here is almost suspenseful in its calmness. Everyone is moving, everyone is watching, but nothing has exploded yet. It's that breathless moment before the storm. The only thing I'd say is that the transition into the Exchange Platform stuff at the very end felt a tiny bit abrupt — we go from high-tension human drama to Mei Qian filtering nutrient solutions, which is a tonal shift. But honestly, it works as a decompression valve after all that scheming.
Excellent grade can't wait for the other books.
