Really well written!
I keep thinking about the wedding dress. This million-dollar dress, designed to make her look her most dazzling, and she ends up cutting it to shreds with scissors because she can't even reach the zipper. It's such a perfect metaphor for everything. The dress represents the life she thought she wanted — the validation, the status, the revenge against her stepsister, the love she thought Lu Tingyan might actually feel for her. And it's all destroyed because the zipper is hidden at the back. She can't even fasten her own destiny. She has to cut it apart to be free. There's also the spotlight imagery. She walks down the aisle toward the light, toward Lu Tingyan, but the light reveals a fake groom instead. The spotlight that should celebrate her becomes an instrument of humiliation. And then she SMASHES the spotlight. She destroys the very thing that was exposing her. The cigarette smoke Lu Tingyan blows toward her is another symbol I can't shake — it's poison, it's toxicity, it's the thing that should repel her but somehow she's drawn to it anyway. And that photo she takes? The "post-intimacy" atmosphere of his disheveled back? She's trying to reclaim power through imagery, through controlling the narrative. Everything in this book feels layered with meaning.

I really liked this book up until the very end. The book ended so abruptly, it felt rushed and was very disappointing.

Good read. Human nature on display. Though sometimes the story seems implausible, especially Henry Truman's superhuman strength and the unending gullibility, lack of shame and the evil propensities of almost all the other characters.
