Great story!
"When I was a child, the elders used to say that splashing oneself with water and pomelo leaves can drive away bad luck. You should hurry up and do that, Mistress Li, or else..." I need to talk about Concubine Zhang because this woman is a masterpiece of passive aggression. She doesn't just insult Li Wanran — she wraps it in folklore and delivers it with a smile, then covers her mouth with a handkerchief like she's sharing a joke. The unspoken implication is so clear: you're bad luck, you're ruined, you're here because my mistress's baby died and someone had to take the fall. But here's what really got me — Li Wanran's reaction. She doesn't explode. She doesn't cry. She mentally pats herself on the back for understanding the insult immediately. That's such a specific kind of humor: the comedy of a woman who is constantly calculating, constantly translating polite language into actual meaning, and who finds small victories in basic comprehension. Then there's Concubine Yi, who I'm genuinely curious about. One moment she's the quiet one who can't be prodded to speak, and the next she's leaning forward saying she wants to spend every day with Li Wanran. The other two women are genuinely confused — they look at her like she's been replaced by an impostor. Is Yi being sincere? Is she playing a longer game? Or is she just the only person in this room who isn't trying to manipulate Li Wanran for some reason? And Mistress Song — oh, Mistress Song. She's the Primary Consort, the favorite, mourning her dead child, and she's genuinely threatened by Li Wanran's beauty but covers it with warm sisterly language. The moment Li Wanran leaves, Song's internal monologue reveals everything: she's calculating, she's insecure, she's trying to convince herself the Prince won't be swayed by pretty faces. She's not a villain. She's a woman in a system that forces her to see everyone as competition. The dynamic between these three women and Li Wanran feels so alive. Nobody is purely good or evil. They're all just trying to survive in a space where a single wrong word could cost you everything.
So good! Storyline and how it’s being written, amazing! You feel for the characters, so drawn into it. Can’t wait to see how it continues to unfold. You are quite the cliffhanger leaver at the end of each chapter but so good because it just makes us want more!
