The recurring motif of vision and sight is striking too. Gu Nanci's "narrow, dark eyes shimmering with faint mockery." Gu Xiao's "reddened eyes." The cameraman's lens. The audience's automatic gaze locking onto her. Eyes are how power is exercised and how it's challenged. And beneath all of this, the chapter asks a deeper question: when someone who was trained to be invisible suddenly becomes impossible to ignore, what happens to the world that tried to erase them? The answer, apparently, is: everything changes.
Makes me sad they keep putting Luca down. It’s like she doesn’t even like him anymore. She doesn’t try to even have a true relationship with him. That seems wrong and unfair.
