awesome story
I need to talk about the wedding scene because WOW. Just WOW. The moment Gu Beiting walks into the room and sees Mu Youyou in that red dress — the text says she looked like she had "stepped out of a painting" and he was literally breathless. And then he says "My wife, I'm here to take you" in this deep, alluring voice? I literally had to pause the book and stare at the wall for a minute. But what got me wasn't even the big romantic moments. It was the tiny ones. Like when she's leaning against his broad chest in the kitchen and feels "a sudden surge of happiness." Or when he kisses her forehead and tells her not to worry, that he'll handle everything. These small gestures carry so much weight because we've been watching them build toward this moment for chapters. The vows scene though — that's where I completely lost it. Gu Beiting saying "From now on, my life will be spent with Mu Youyou, hand in hand through all joys and hardships, without regret" and Mu Youyou just BURSTING into tears. Not because she's sad, but because she knows this man doesn't make promises he can't keep. And then she matches him, word for word almost: "never betraying, never abandoning." The parallel structure of their vows is so deliberate and so beautiful. And the military wives wiping their eyes? Some with envy, some with jealousy, most with blessings? That detail is everything. It shows that these women understand the cost of this life — the hidden tears and hardships — but they're still happy for their captain who finally found someone worth staying for. The wedding night scene is sweet without being crude. He brings her food because he didn't eat much, divides it between them, calls her beautiful, calls her a flatterer when she teases him back. And then the morning after, he's holding her and patting her back "like soothing a baby." That image of him being this fierce, capable soldier who can also be gentle enough to soothe his wife to sleep? Unfair. Absolutely unfair.

I liked this book. Read most of it in one sitting. (finished at 3am). I'm looking forward to Denara's story with Rafael.
