Let me just say this: the opening chapter is a masterclass in how to establish stakes immediately. A man in her house, her dog not barking at him, a mirror that doesn't reflect him—three paragraphs and I already know something is profoundly wrong. Then he drops "your Life Span ends today" and I was hooked. The electrocution-by-water-heater detail is terrifyingly mundane. This isn't some dramatic death by dragon or assassination—this is a faulty appliance in a rental apartment. The banality of it makes it so much worse. But what really keeps the tension alive is the ticking clock. Three days. Four hours to dig a grave at midnight. The grandmother's sons buried her with her abuser "to save trouble." Every task Yu Miaomiao undertakes has real consequences—if she fails, she dies. If she succeeds, she gets three more days and maybe a gold bracelet. The stakes are always clear and always immediate. The external conflict is obvious (survive!), but the internal conflict is what makes me genuinely care. Yu Miaomiao isn't afraid of death itself—she's afraid of what happens AFTER death. Not to her, but to Maodou. She's already accepted her fate and is just trying to make sure her dog is okay. That shift in perspective is brilliant because it raises the emotional stakes even higher. We're not just watching someone try to survive; we're watching someone who has already stopped fighting for herself and is fighting for someone else. And the Soul Ferryman's own conflict—stuck in a job he hates, pressured by underworld bureaucracy, unable to help her scatter her own ashes because "against the rules"—this adds another layer. He's bound by the same system that's killing her. The rules that protect him also prevent him from giving her the one small kindness she asks for at the end of Chapter 2. That moment where he smiles faintly and says "Don't worry—you'll have some soon enough" when she says she has no money... chills. Absolute chills. Because you know he's right, and you know it's not going to be easy, and you're already desperate to read the next chapter.
Typically, I would reserve judgment after reading at least 50 chapters, as early reviews tend to be from inexperienced reviewers. However, this book fails to impress. It's dull, lacking depth, and feels poorly crafted. The author appears lazy, lacking motivation.
The setting is unique, which I'll give them credit for, but there are no thrilling twists or immediate threats. The protagonist returns home after ten years and follows a predictable path. As for the plot, it's either non-existent or moves at a glacial pace. The transitions between chapters are abrupt, with no clear resolution or introduction of new characters.
There's a lack of meaningful progression between scenes, requiring the reader to piece together events with minimal effort. Character reactions are absent, leaving readers unsatisfied. It feels like a disengaged narrator, sharing information in a disconnected manner without engaging the audience.
Characters are one-dimensional, with no distinct personalities – a clear indication of the author's lack of investment. The writing relies heavily on clichéd phrases without substance.
Fights are unimaginative, resembling generic fare from a poorly executed Japanese novel, brought to life by an uninspired writer.
In summary, I'd rate the setting a 2 out of 5, only recommending it for those seeking mindless entertainment.
I'm unsure about its low rating, but I genuinely adore this. Without diving too deep:
Pros:
1. The translation is delightful.
2. The protagonist is well-developed and relatable – she's driven by her own motives and has an edge in knowledge, yet her vulnerabilities and thought processes make her feel genuine.
3. Supporting characters are fleshed out subtly, offering glimpses into their personalities without feeling forced.
4. The plot stands out within its genre, breaking away from typical tropes. I won't spoil it, but suffice it to say, it's intriguing. Give it a try if you're curious!
Cons:
1. As of the date (10-23-2024), there might be limited chapters available, but that's more of a personal issue – my timing couldn't have been worse, leaving me hanging. Honestly, I struggle to find significant drawbacks.
2. Perhaps the lack of updates could be seen as a con, but when you genuinely enjoy a story, even with imperfections, it feels perfect to you.
If you're seeking a captivating read with unique, non-traditional characters, this one's worth giving a shot.
To be honest, the novel starts off weak and unfortunately deteriorates as the story progresses. The plot becomes monotonous, to the point where I could predict each subplot after reading the initial chapter. It loses its appeal when there's no element of surprise. I believe the story serves more as a vehicle for wish fulfillment, as it's highly unrealistic and充斥ed with unconvincing non-romantic developments. As a result, it becomes tiresome to read. While the first two arcs might offer some entertainment, in my opinion, there's little value beyond that point, and I wouldn't recommend the book to others.
