The stakes in this section are absolutely terrifying and I love it. Let me break down every conflict layer because there are SO MANY: External conflict: Zombie clearing mission. They have to return before nightfall. Jiang Jingfeng is out there wanting revenge after getting humiliated. Basic survival stakes. Interpersonal conflict: Zhao Yan vs. Jiang Jingfeng. Zhao Yan literally beats his face into bruised purple because the guy threatened Le Huan. Zhou Bai and Wu You let it happen because honestly? Jiang Jingfeng needed to be put in his place. But this creates ongoing tension—Jiang Jingfeng now knows Zhao Yan is terrifyingly strong and probably won't forget this. Internal conflict: Zhao Yan's monster theory. He's fighting his own fear that the person he just started loving might not be human. Every beautiful glance from Le Huan becomes evidence in his head. He's choosing ignorance but he's NOT unobservant—which means this is a conflict that will inevitably explode. Romantic stakes: Le Huan might leave. She literally thinks about whether she can take Zhao Yan with her when she goes home, and concludes she can't. She feels guilt. Zhao Yan senses this and pleads 'don't leave me' while she's pushing him away because she has NO IDEA what he's thinking. The suspense is maintained perfectly because the author gives us dramatic irony—we know Le Huan is human, we know she's from a hospital bed, but Zhao Yan doesn't. Every tender moment is undercut with the question: what happens when he finds out the truth? And the zombie mission adds a literal deadline with the nightfall return requirement. Everything is building toward an inevitable collision and I am HERE for it.
