This is one of my favorites of this series so far. So well written, so creative & descriptive. This author truly has a gift, and the stories are absolutely worth reading. Another job well done author - can’t wait for the rest! :)

The stakes in this story are layered in the best way. On the surface, you've got Tong Qianqian trying to steal Wanwan's destiny—simple sibling rivalry with a supernatural twist. But then you layer on the Li family's internal politics: concubines, succession, the Old Master's illness, the Old Madam's desperation for a granddaughter. And underneath ALL of that, there's this supernatural threat—the soul-devouring worms that are literally eating the Old Master alive, and whatever cursed force sent them there. What really keeps me hooked is that the author never lets me forget what's at stake. Every chapter raises the question: who is trying to manipulate whom, and what happens if they succeed? Tong Qianqian's plan could literally cost Wanwan her entire future. The worms could kill the Old Master. And somewhere in the background, there's this mysterious Western man with priceless parrots who seems to know more than he's letting on. The tension never drops. Even in the quieter moments—like Wanwan eating shrimp at that fancy restaurant—there's this underlying current that something BIG is coming. I keep thinking about that line where Wanwan tells her mom "don't be afraid, the bugs on Grandpa won't bite us" and the Old Madam completely misses the meaning. The dramatic irony is killing me because I KNOW what those bugs are and nobody else does.

I wouldn't give it a 3, nor a 4; my rating would be 7 out of 10. The story was quite charming and provided a pleasant reading experience. The main female character had a few Mary Sue qualities, but the lighter moments balanced it out nicely. I particularly appreciated the unique take on the throne battle - instead of the usual portrayal of ruthless princes, they formed a bond due to their shared upbringing, which the protagonist facilitated. The story touched upon the impact of royal expectations on their mental health, humanizing them as young adults who missed out on a normal childhood. Overall, it was an engaging read with heartwarming elements.

For me it's one of those books that I'd only read if it was complete. It's not the best but just something to pass the time for me.
