Let me gush about how each character has such a distinct voice here because honestly it's impressive. Li Wanran's internal monologue is my absolute favorite. Right after she falls into Yinzhen's arms, she thinks: "Oh my god, he's a hottie! My wish came true!" And then immediately after, she's thanking deities and vowing to be their most loyal believer. This is such a perfect contrast between her external composure and internal chaos. The dialogue between her thoughts and her spoken words creates this hilarious double layer. When she's whispering to Yinzhen, "Master, it hurts so much..." she's performing vulnerability, but the reader knows exactly what's happening behind her eyes. Yinzhen's dialogue is sparse but loaded. He barely speaks and every word carries weight. "How long do you intend to lean there?" — that's not just a question, it's a challenge. He's testing her even in that moment of physical closeness. And later, "Raise your head." Two words, commanding, cold, and yet the scene becomes electric. His dialogue doesn't need to be lengthy because his presence does the talking. Then there's Zhang, whose dialogue is all performance. "The sky was getting dark, and I was afraid Mistress Li couldn't see the path clearly, so I thought to help her along." Said with a shy glance at Yinzhen. The subtext is screaming. She's performing kindness for an audience, and the dialogue reveals everything about her calculating nature without the narrator having to explain it. And Caiwei's entrance! "Heavens! Mistress only went out once, how did you get injured like this?" The drama queen energy is off the charts. Her dialogue is so over-the-top that it's almost comedic, but it also makes you understand her ambition—she's performing loyalty to differentiate herself from Banxia. The author's narrative voice itself is also worth praising. It's witty, slightly irreverent, and never takes itself too seriously. Lines like "It was a classic case of the logical person being overwhelmed by the brute" show a narrator who's clearly having fun with the material.
