The text compares her past self to someone who was "possessed by evil spirits" or had her "mind simply gone astray," and only after dying did she regain clarity — "as if the water in her brain had been drained, or as if some kind of shackle had been broken." That's not just character development. That's the core theme of the entire book screaming at us. The shackle wasn't external — it was the conditioned belief that family obligation equals love. The Yu Family exploited her, abused her, and she still tried to save them. Dying was the only thing that broke the spell. And the Leijimu — thousand-year-old ebony struck by lightning, capable of warding off evil spirits — is almost ironically symbolic. San Qi spent years gathering this extraordinary object for Yu Minwu, someone who never appreciated her. Now she's hiding it from him, considering giving it to Yan Du instead. The object that was supposed to suppress ghosts is now being withheld from the real ghosts — the family members who haunted her life. The straw puppet she puts away on Yan Du's bed is another detail that sticks with me. It's a folk magic object, something from her village life with Granny Meng. She's placing her rural, spiritual heritage into the cold, formal space of a general's mansion. There's something deeply symbolic about that — her old world meeting this new one, and her choosing to keep the puppet hidden rather than display it. The medicine itself — made with her own blood — is the ultimate symbol of what the Yu Family took from her. Literally her life force, processed into something they could consume and discard.
