Okay so let me just say—this banquet scene is one of the most visually striking things I've read in a while. You've got this massive imperial hall, all jeweled beauty and elegant company, everyone paired up with their companions, and then right there beneath the dragon throne, one empty seat beside the Duke of Duanding. The only stillness in the whole place. That detail alone does SO much heavy lifting. It's not just a description, it's a statement. The author doesn't need to write "he is profoundly alone" because the empty chair says it for him. And before that, the scene on the bridge between the East Auxiliary Tower and the main hall—two young girls hurrying, Yixi grabbing Pei Nai's sleeve, the winter wind cutting through. You can literally feel the cold. The text says "a cold winter wind swept in through the window, cutting sharply across Pei Nai's face" and then immediately follows with that memory fragment of the desert, the dried well, the northern wind whipping flags. The parallel between the physical cold she feels now and the desolate cold of her past-life memory is chef's kiss. The author is building this whole sensory world where temperature and memory are tangled together. The imperial garden stroll before the banquet, Huifang Hall with noble ladies chatting over pastries, the gradual dimming of the sky—all of it creates this lived-in atmosphere. This isn't a backdrop; it's a character. The palace feels vast, suffocating, beautiful, and dangerous all at once. Every location has weight. What really got me though was Gu Jinheng at the banquet, not eating, not drinking, just lifting a teacup and setting it down. Over and over. While everyone else is feasting and performing, he's this statue of stillness in the center of noise. The contrast between the lively hall and his absolute detachment—"In such a lively hall, only someone like Pei Nai—who kept watching him—would have noticed." That line. That's the author winking at us, saying: pay attention to what everyone else misses. This world feels ancient and real, like you could reach out and touch the carved windows and silk robes and cold stone bridges. I'm obsessed.
Great book…DO NOT START until the book says it’s complete. This author is inconsistent with updates.
