Beautiful story line
There are so many symbols layered into these first two chapters that I keep finding new ones every time I reread. The floor bed—made of stools and broken planks—is the most powerful image of Lin Qiao'er's status. She sleeps on the floor of the main hall in her own family's house, while her aunt and cousins occupy the real rooms. This isn't just poverty; it's erasure. She exists in this home but has no place in it. Then there's the stick. Lin Defei hiding a large stick behind his back while wearing a kind smile. The stick represents the violence that underpins every interaction in this family. It's always there, just out of sight, waiting. The moonlight revealing it is almost poetic—truth coming to light in the darkness. The medical book is another symbol I can't stop thinking about. It's her father's book—a barefoot doctor's manual. He was a healer, someone who helped people. And now she's using his book to understand her own body, to survive. The knowledge her father left her becomes her tool for escape. There's something deeply moving about that lineage of care and survival. And the pregnancy itself—this thing that could destroy her reputation, that could make her a pariah—is reframed by the narrative as her salvation. The child's voice warns her, protects her, gives her purpose. What was supposed to be her downfall becomes her lifeline. The author is playing with the idea that in a world that wants to discard you, the very thing you're most afraid of might be the thing that saves you. I'm already theorizing about who the father is and whether the child's voice means there's something supernatural at play here. This story is going to be incredible.
I don't usually write reviews unless a book truly moves me. This novel had a profound emotional impact; I shed tears at least twice, both from heart-wrenching scenes and moments of joy for the characters, which are rare for me.
One particularly poignant scene was when everyone decided to return to Shi Jin and Lian Jun – that moment tugged at my heartstrings intensely. The character development in this novel is exceptional; each character is well-rounded with distinct personalities and backgrounds. The story focuses heavily on forgiveness and overcoming hatred, with forgiveness being the dominant theme. Shi Jin's恨意直到小说三分之二后才逐渐显现，这主要是由于剧情发展中的生死因素。阅读后，读者会明白我的意思。
The relationship between Shi Jin and Lian Jun is adorable; they're a couple deeply in love, but their affection didn't happen instantly – their connection felt genuine and logical. Lian Jun isn't a possessive or obsessive character; he experiences jealousy like any person, but not to an excessive extent. Despite being a mafia boss, he's relatable due to his vulnerabilities – his injured legs, pickiness about food, and slim physique. After his healing, which occurs towards the end of the story, he transforms into a caring and supportive partner. Shi Jin is neither helpless nor overpowered; he's capable of defending himself but isn't invincible, as witnessed by his brothers Gua Two and Gua One, who manage to defeat him but sustain injuries in the process.
Xiao Xi, another character, adds a touch of sweetness with his playful teasing, occasionally leading to humorous situations where he ends up locked up by Shi Jin.
What I appreciate most about this novel is its authentic ending – the author didn't rush it, delivering a satisfying conclusion that would likely please most readers. It offered a genuinely happy ending, making it a standout read for me.
Can someone who has finished the novel tell me if it has romance or not?

Read a decent portion of lotm, but have read multiple LONG novels along with having read practically nonstop for two years, that was a while ago that I tried to read this…
