Half way through, lots of steam, but it’s not so much hate, as it is caring.
What's terrifying about this passage is how the stakes escalate without any dramatic events happening. Nothing 'bad' occurs for three years. No assassinations, no betrayals, no cultivation breakthroughs. And yet the tension is ALWAYS there, humming underneath everything like a power line about to snap. Ding Li knows what's coming. She knows Xiao Wenjing's role in the original story. Every peaceful morning at Mao hour, every snack shared with Lin Ziyuan, every glance at Qiyuan Peak's empty courtyard — she's living on borrowed time. The reader knows it too, which makes every cozy moment ache. The moment Xiao Wenjing appears at the trial and asks 'What are you looking for?' with that cold voice — the stakes just materialized. Up until now he'd been an abstract threat, a plot device, 'the malicious second male lead.' Now he's a person standing three feet away with a striking face and dead eyes. And Ding Li's response? She 'immediately suppressed her smile, adopting a thoughtful expression.' She has to perform normalcy while her entire being is screaming. This is the core tension of the whole narrative — she's a modern person with modern knowledge trapped in a story where knowledge doesn't equal power. She knows the plot but can't change it. She's cultivated for three years and is still essentially a weakling. The stakes aren't just 'will she survive.' They're 'how much of herself will she lose trying to survive?'
I have never been someone who reads past midnight, but this book? I stayed up way too late and I have zero regrets. The pacing is absolutely ruthless in the best way. Chapter 1 opens mid-scene—no boring setup, no exposition dump, just straight into the tension between these two. We learn everything we need to know about their three-year arranged marriage, the physical intimacy, the divorce papers, and his hidden feelings all in one chapter. That is efficient storytelling at its finest. Chapter 2 slows down a bit with the morning routine, but even then it's never boring. The slow walk from the bedroom through the fifty-meter corridor, the elevator ride, the conversation with Teacher Wen overheard in the reception hall—it's all building this simmering dread. And then Chapter 3 hits us with the waxflower scene and the order to cut it down, and I was like... WHAT JUST HAPPENED. The chapter endings are perfectly calibrated. Each one leaves you with a question or an emotional punch that demands the next chapter. The author never lets you breathe for too long, but also never rushes through the important moments. The transition from the bedroom to the sunroom to the confrontation with Teacher Wen feels like a tightening spiral. Also, the way the author uses Nan Qiu as a pacing device is genius. She's the steady presence who grounds us between the emotional chaos, and her reactions help us gauge how intense things are without the narrative having to tell us directly.

The story is just too long winded. 300+ chapters already and yet Byron doenst know yet about his twin sons and Rosalie doesnt know yet that Estie is his daughter. Wont continue further.
