Okay so I need to talk about Father Su because this man is the absolute master of the 'I care but I'm not gonna say it directly' energy and I am HERE for it. Let me set the scene: he limps through the door after a long day, his wife immediately notices and tries to tell him to ease up, and what does he do? He just cuts her off with 'Enough. I know my limits.' Bro. You don't know your limits, you absolute unit. But then the real moment hits. Su Meier greets him sweetly — 'Dad, you're back' — and his entire demeanor shifts. His tone is stern but there's this 'awkward note of concern' underneath. He asks about her injury, tells her never to do something so foolish again. And then the narration just drops this gem: 'Perhaps this was how fathers of this era expressed their love—deep and reserved, rarely putting their feelings into words.' I literally gasped. This man is the production team captain, the guy who runs everything with an iron fist, who tells his daughter-in-law she's not trustworthy with authority, who casually hands out government positions at the dinner table like it's nothing — but with his actual daughter, he can barely get three warm words out. And she KNOWS it. She spins around to prove she's fine, playing along with his awkwardness, and he just 'quietly let out a sigh of relief.' The fact that he planned her entire career path before telling anyone — not even his own wife — shows how much he trusts her. That's his love language. Not flowers, not hugs, but 'I've already secured you a stable government job, now eat your vegetables.' Also the way he shuts down Zhang Aiyuan's greed in the same breath? Chef's kiss. 'As long as I'm here, you won't dare.' He's protecting his daughter AND teaching his daughter-in-law a lesson in one sentence. This man is a whole mood.
Wonderful story! The author helps readers to see PTSD in unexpected situations. We need more talk about these issues and more talk of sexual abuse. When I survived frequent abuse in the 60s it was a secret. There was no one to talk to. Thank you for modeling what it means to be supportive.
