I came here to talk about He Yuan and Lin Yue's dialogue but honestly I need to derail because Zhou Yunce is carrying this entire section on his back and I will not apologize for this. "The one nearest the water gets the moon first. The moon is already in your courtyard. Don't tell me you can't reach it?" Bro. Bro bro bro. This man is a menace and I love him. He walks in, sees the bandage situation, drops a classical Chinese poetry reference about unrequited love, and then when He Yuan deflects with the apartment thing, Zhou Yunce is like "with your intelligence, you could've found a hundred reasons to keep her there." This is the funniest character in the book and he only has a few scenes across these chapters and he has done MORE than most characters do in entire novels. But let's talk about He Yuan and Lin Yue's actual dialogue because it's doing something really interesting. Notice how formal it is? "President He." "Secretary Lin." Even when he's taking her to his house, even when he's cleaning her wound, the titles stay. The power dynamic is baked into every single exchange. But then there are these tiny cracks—"Give me your hand," said softly. "It might hurt a bit." The shift from formal to intimate happens in the subtext, not in the words. That's sophisticated writing. The author trusts us to read between the lines. And Lin Yue's internal voice is perfect. She's constantly second-guessing herself, overthinking, apologizing. "I-I can just find a hotel myself." The stutter, the retreat, the immediate compliance. She's not naive—she's just conditioned to be careful around people with power. Her dialogue with Qin Yan on the phone is warmer, more relaxed, and that contrast tells us everything about how she moves through different spaces. The Su Ying phone call scene is also worth noting because of what the author DOESN'T write. Su Ying hangs up without waiting for a reply. That's not just a character detail—that's a power move communicated through dialogue structure. The silence after the hang-up is louder than any line could be.
Female leads are my favorites, loving this already.
