I love this book so much so far.

As Lin Kexin correctly points out, "If you get a police record, forget ever going back to the city." That is the nuclear option. In this time and place, a criminal record means your future is over. You can't return to urban life, you can't find good work, you're trapped in the countryside with nowhere to go. But the stakes aren't just Liu Xuewei's. For the Jiang family, this is about control and saving face. Old Madam Jiang has publicly accused an educated youth of fraud — if she backs down without getting something, she looks weak. That's why the marriage option is on the table. It's a face-saving solution that also benefits them. For Lin Kexin, the stakes are different but real — she's watching her rival get destroyed, and every step of the way she's calculating.
