And then there's Su Yirou's side of things, which somehow makes it even more tragic. She also got burned. She married Huo Jingsheng because she wanted him, and he never even looked at her. She became a widow, was called a jinx, beaten by her in-laws, and rejected by her own father. She clung to Jiang Wentao because he was the only warmth she had left, and he used that too. Both women were used. Both women were discarded. Both women died on the same day, month, and year—which Jiang Wentao interpreted as destiny, but honestly reads more like karmic justice to me. What gives me hope is Su Yiwei's reaction in this new life. She didn't break. She didn't collapse into tears. She clenched her fists until her fingertips turned white and decided to play the long game. There's something so powerful about a woman who has been utterly destroyed and still chooses to fight instead of surrender.

There's a scene where Qin Su comes home and the apartment is completely spotless. Not just clean — sparkles. The kitchen table that was covered in leftover medicinal herbs is gone, everything is organized inside cabinets, not a single speck of dust. And she has no idea who did it. This is one of those moments that just paints the whole world in a single image. Then Zhang Ming comes over, hoping to catch a ghost causing trouble, and instead finds this immaculate apartment. His disappointment is palpable. He wanted a haunting, he wanted her to flee, and instead she's just... pleased? The contrast between what he expected and what he finds is comedy gold. And then Qin Su drops the line: 'I think I already know.' She pretends to adjust nonexistent glasses and says it must have been a Snail Maiden. The folktale reference is such a specific cultural touchstone that immediately tells you something about this world — ghosts exist, they have personalities, and apparently they have opinions about interior design. The fact that she then reveals she specifically sought out a haunted apartment because 'ghosts have always liked me since I was little' and even mentions a lady in red once escorted her home safely — that's worldbuilding through character backstory, not exposition dumps. Efficient and eerie.
