I just finished reading chapters 34-40 and I need to process the pacing because honestly? It's masterful. Let me back up. The chapter opens with Zhang Hu's backstory—his mustache, his burning it off, his motivation. This is character exposition, but it's so naturally woven in that you don't even notice you're learning about him. He's not a info-dump; he's a person telling you why he cares. Then we pivot to the princess's economic planning. This could have been a boring policy speech, but the author keeps it grounded in her personality—her muttering about sweet potatoes and corn, her frustration with the fictional map, her sudden excitement about wool. It's restless, energetic, and totally believable for someone who thinks in systems. The transition to Xu Fanghuai building the steel mill feels organic. We go from high-level economic strategy to on-the-ground implementation, and the pacing never drags because each scene has a clear purpose: Zhang Hu experiences the kang beds' impact, Xu Fanghuai sees the practical next steps, the princess gets her fiefdom. And then—BAM—the tavern scene. Just when you think you're done with policy discussions, a horse kicks a child and the whole tone shifts. The sudden violence, the mother's grief, the physicians' descent, the crowd's reaction. It's a complete tonal pivot that catches you off guard, and it works because the preceding chapters have established these doctors as skilled and compassionate. You're not just watching a random accident—you're watching the people you've been learning about in action. The chapter ends on that carriage leaving, the crowd still processing, the young rider gone. It's a perfect mini-cliffhanger. You want to know what happens next, but you also feel satisfied having witnessed something meaningful. This is how you pace a development arc. Not with constant action, but with emotional rhythm—setup, implementation, crisis, resolution, new question.
Very beautifully written!
THIS BOOK SHOULD HAVE ENDED A VERY LONG TIME AGO! HOW LONG DO YOU PLAN TO RIP PEOPLE OFF WITH ALL THESE RIDICULOUS CHAPTERS?
I wish Mia and ana got along and Damon finally accepted ana as his wife and they end up having kids together
