The Side Courtyard isn't just a setting—it's a character that's slowly suffocating Qin Shu. Let me just quote one passage because it's too good: "The night was as dark as ink that refused to dissolve. Only the cold wind wailed through the cracks in the torn paper windows, like countless restless spirits sobbing in grief." This is the kind of writing that makes you feel physically cold. The torn paper windows, the icy stone floor, the damp chill that seeps into bones—every detail reinforces that this place is designed to break people. And it's working. But what really got me was the candle imagery. The candle keeps appearing throughout these chapters like some kind of visual motif. First, Qin Shu reaches toward the flickering flame and the molten wax hardens into "ugly scars along its sides." Then later, Floating Cloud's confession happens under that same uncertain candlelight, and her face looks like a "shocking totem of vengeance." And at the end, Jiang Chen arrives and the candle is still there, flickering, as if the whole courtyard exists in this perpetual state of dying light. The pomegranate tree outside the window is dead—just dead branches. No fruit, no life. And yet Qin Shu is staring at it, her hatred sealed beneath icy calm, like the tree itself is mirroring what's happening inside her. The author is building this whole world where nature itself seems to have given up, and that makes the revenge plot feel almost inevitable, like the only thing that can grow here is vengeance. The medicinal herb smell mixed with old dust and damp chill—that's the scent of this place. It's not romanticized at all. This is a living tomb. And honestly, the worldbuilding is so immersive that I forgot I was reading a novel and just felt like I was standing in that courtyard myself. Chilling.
