I need to talk about the antagonists in these chapters because the author is setting up conflict in layers and I am HERE for it. Jiang Ying is fascinating because she's not a cartoon villain. She's a reborn person who thinks she knows how the story should go, and Jiang Tian's sudden intelligence is throwing off her entire plan. That's genuinely threatening — not because Jiang Ying is powerful, but because she has foreknowledge and she's willing to use gossip and manipulation to get what she wants. When she goes to the village chief at night and suggests Jiang Tian and Lu Shili might be having an "illicit affair," that's a serious accusation in this setting. The stakes of that conversation could have ruined Jiang Tian's reputation entirely. But the village chief shuts her down hard. "Don't say I didn't warn you." This is a pivotal moment because it establishes that Jiang Tian now has institutional protection — the village chief sees through Jiang Ying's schemes. That raises the stakes for future conflicts because Jiang Ying now knows she can't win by going through official channels. And then there's Lin Muyu. Oh man. Lin Muyu is the real threat here. He's described as someone who pretends and puts on airs, who mooches off young women on trains, who is "useless with no money and no strength" but still looks down on Xie Chen. Jiang Ying's realization that she was strung along by him is devastating because it means her rebirth didn't actually save her from her own patterns. She saw the truth too late in her past life, and now she's repeating the same mistakes. The stakes with Lin Muyu are higher than Jiang Ying's scheming because he's manipulative on a deeper level. He's not just gossiping — he's actively trying to latch onto Lu Shili for his own benefit. When he offers to help Lu Shili carry things and Lu Shili "subtly avoids him," that's a small moment but it tells us everything about Lin Muyu's nature: he's performative, opportunistic, and transparent to anyone who's paying attention. What keeps me engaged is that the conflict isn't just external. Jiang Tian has internal stakes too — she's protecting her family, managing her secret space carefully, and navigating a new relationship with Lu Shili while keeping her true capabilities hidden. The tension between what she knows and what she can reveal is a constant low-grade stakes engine that never stops running.

The first chapter is really exciting and intriguing, I could feel all of his emotions. Author has a thing for story telling and bringing these characters to life. I'm definitely unlocking more chapters, can't wait to see how it plays out.
There are symbols running through this text that hit way harder than I expected on first read. The jade pendant. Grandmother 'had been forced to sell her treasured jade pendant' to pay the uncle's gambling debts. This object represents everything wrong with this family system — the mother's side is being systematically drained to feed the father's side, and even the grandmother's most precious possession wasn't spared. But here's the thing: the grandmother herself is both victim and perpetrator. She pawned the jade, yes, but she's also the one demanding more from Wang Fang. She's trapped in the same patriarchal logic that destroyed her, and now she's enforcing it on her daughter. That's the tragedy — it's not just one bad person, it's a system that eats everyone. The wolfdog is equally loaded. Lin Jianshan — fresh out of detention, no shame, strutting around with a vicious animal — the dog is literally an extension of him. 'He showed no shame about having just gotten out of detention, and even smugly called out to her to look at his new dog.' A man who uses a predator to intimidate women, who thinks fear is a language people should understand. And then Xiao Ziyi breaks the dog's head onto the ground. This isn't just action — it's thematic. The old world's violence (the gambling, the favoritism, the predatory behavior) being physically subdued by someone from outside the system. And the baton! Lin Yiran carrying a weapon — 'fastened the baton at her waist' — this is her claiming agency in a world that keeps telling her she's worthless. Her brother made it smaller for her, tailored to her strength. 'Your first priority is always to run' — he wants her safe, but he also knows she needs to be able to fight. The baton is both shield and statement. Zhuang Wenting's nightmare at the end — 'a huge wolfdog lunged at her, trying to devour her whole' — trauma doesn't care that the danger is over. The story understands that.
