I don't know if you've noticed, but this author doesn't waste words on dialogue. Everything is lean, functional, and loaded with subtext. Take this exchange: "Are you heading that way?" "Yes." "In that case, let's go with them." That's it. Three lines and suddenly three strangers become companions. No long explanations, no forced bonding scenes. The dialogue feels natural because it mirrors how people actually talk in crisis—short, direct, efficient. Chen Qingzhou's lines are particularly telling. He doesn't say much, but when he does, it reveals everything. "Thank you for saving my wife." Four words. Possessive, grateful, protective. In one sentence, we know exactly who he is and what he values. Gu Nuan's dialogue is sparse too, but her few lines carry emotional weight. "I'm alright." She says this multiple times in the chapter, and each time it means something different. First it's reassurance. Then it's determination. Then it's exhaustion. The narrator's voice is clean and unobtrusive—it gets out of the way and lets the characters speak for themselves. I wish more authors understood that dialogue doesn't need to be clever to be effective. Sometimes it just needs to be true.
