Okay so let me just say — the author is a menace with how they handle plot threading. You've got this whole subplot with Nanping practically strutting in like she owns the place, declaring Yan Huaijin as hers for the day, and then the narrative just... pivots. Like, one second we're watching this petty noble girl try to assert dominance, and the next we're under an umbrella in the rain with Pei Yunting half-asleep on Yan Huaijin's shoulder. That's not a non-sequitur though — it's actually brilliant misdirection. The author makes you invest in the rivalry tension, lets it simmer, then deliberately deflates it with something so tender it catches you off guard. And then — BAM — the embezzlement case drops back in. Yu Jin shows up, his father's implicated, and suddenly the personal drama and the political conspiracy are braiding together. Pei Yunting casually mentions she solved a case while disguised during Yan Huaijin's recovery, which means she's been operating independently this whole time without him knowing. That's a plot thread I did NOT see coming. She's not just some love interest tagging along — she's actively investigating on her own. The chapter ends with Yan Huaijin receiving urgent news and having to leave abruptly. Classic mid-moment interruption. I was genuinely mad about it. They were having a quiet, intimate moment and then *click* — duty calls. The author knows exactly what they're doing with these structural choices.
