He cleaves it like tofu. But the real symbol is the water. She can't lift the bucket. He does it effortlessly. Water in this story isn't just water—it's survival. It's the difference between having a home and losing it. Her uncle's family wants to take everything. Zhang the Lame is supposed to marry her and presumably take her labor. The water vat being full is a tiny, domestic victory. And Chu Jing's amnesia—what does that mean symbolically? He doesn't remember who he was, so he has to become someone new. She doesn't remember feeling safe, so she has to build safety from scratch. They're both blank slates in a world that wants to write on them. The slave market is the ultimate symbol of people as property, and she just... bought one. But the moment he chooses to protect her, to close that door on Wu Shi, the property becomes a person. The deed becomes a relationship. I keep thinking about that word the author used: bewitched. Like magic is what's actually happening here, not commerce.
