'The entire world is the Emperor's chessboard, and you must become the most useful pawn. Only then can you truly protect yourself.' This line is the thematic core of the whole passage, and I think it's going to echo throughout the story. A pawn is the most disposable piece on a chessboard — and yet, A-Man is saying it's the most strategic position to be in. Why? Because pawns can move forward one step at a time, they can promote, and they're the pieces you sacrifice to protect the more valuable ones. Shen Xinyan is currently a pawn being moved by others — the Empress Dowager, the Yao family, Madam Yao Qian. The goal is to become a pawn that the Emperor himself doesn't want to sacrifice. To accumulate 'capital' — whatever that means in this context — until even making a mistake wouldn't cost her her life. There's also the chessboard imagery that connects to everything: Madam Yao Qian manipulating shopkeepers, tying them 'to the same rope,' the servants who 'waver like reeds in the wind.' Everyone is playing a game. Everyone is a piece. The question is whether you're moving yourself or being moved. And the symbolism of the blacksmith shop itself is interesting — weapons, tools of war, bought and sold in the rough part of town. Shen Xinyan, a titled lady, going to a place where people trade instruments of violence. She's gathering her own weapons, figuratively. The pawn becomes armed.
