The worldbuilding in this novel is something else. You can literally FEEL the era just from the details the author throws at you. Let me paint you a picture: Xu Xi sitting on the back of Zhou Yue's bicycle, clutching his uniform, spitting at villagers who mock her. The bicycle itself is such a specific detail—this is pre-modern China, where bicycles are status symbols and transportation. The military base, the train journey, the straw mat on the floor, the cornmeal buns—every single detail anchors you in this time and place. But what really makes the world feel alive is the social atmosphere. The villagers gossiping about the wedding, the entire regiment knowing about Zhou Yue's marriage within a morning, Mother Zhou's silent disapproval—it all creates this pressure-cooker environment where everyone's watching everyone else. The Zhou family courtyard with its banquet tables and the contrast between the festive setup and the sour faces of the hosts? That's cinematic. I could see this as a TV drama. And Xu Xi's room—just a bed, wardrobe, and table, quilt folded into a perfect square. That square quilt tells you everything about Zhou Yue's character and the military discipline that shapes this world. The author doesn't need to explain the setting; the objects in the room do the work.
