The pacing in this section is absolutely relentless and I need to break down why it works so well. Chapter 16 opens with a relatively contained scene—Shen Shuxue confronting Su Ran at the banquet. This is the first act: verbal sparring, social maneuvering, the kind of tension where everyone is circling each other. Nan Lexi enters and escalates slightly, but it's still within the bounds of aristocratic politeness. The reader is being primed, fed just enough anger to want resolution. Then Chapter 17 detonates. Lu Yitang's entrance is the pivot point—she doesn't just add fuel, she changes the entire chemical composition of the scene. The four-million-tael reveal is the second act climax, and it recontextualizes everything that came before. Shen Que's reaction—shock, disbelief, jaw clenched, pupils contracting—is the reader's reaction externalized. But the author doesn't let the chapter rest there. Immediately after the reveal, Nan Lexi feigns fainting, Lu Yitang sees through it, and then the third act begins: the full offensive. Lu Yitang's speech about consorting without matchmakers, bearing children out of wedlock, spending another woman's dowry while claiming the right—this is escalation from defense to total warfare. The pacing accelerates with each paragraph. The structural choice to have Xie Chengyuan observe from above while the ground-level drama unfolds is brilliant pacing too. It gives the reader a breather between scenes, a moment to process what's happening, while simultaneously building anticipation for when he'll intervene. Lu Yunzhi's arrival and his comment about his sister being worth ten others creates a perfect bridge to the next chapter. The cliffhanger ending—Lu Yitang declaring "let's make you the example" and launching into her full indictment—leaves you absolutely desperate for the next chapter. The pacing here is a masterclass in controlled escalation.
